Tree Day 2018

Tree Day 2018
2nd & 3rd Class
Thursday, October 4, 2018 - 09:00 - 12:00

On Thursday 2nd& 3rd Class went seperately on a tree walk in Iveagh Gardens. Donal, one of the gardeners, brought us around the park showing us interesting things. We saw mushrooms growing out of trees which is not a good sign of a healthy tree. We learnt that camogie sticks are made from ash and conkers are the biggest seeds in Ireland. Back in the old days, they planted Lime trees in parks to keep ladies make-up from melting as it was made from wax. Most of the trees were 175 years old. We saw walnut and hazelnut trees and empty nut shells where the squirrels had been! We learnt that ivy is important as it is one of the only plants that blossom in Autumn and the bees love it.

At the end we looked at the waterfall and had a little play.
