Sr Orla Treacy
Whole School
Wednesday, April 3, 2019 (All day)

Sister Orla Treacy, a Loreto sister and an International Woman of Courage honoree came to speak with the girls, teachers and some parents about life in the Loreto school in Rumbek, South Sudan.

Sr Orla, a past pupil of Loreto Bray, along with four other Loreto sisters founded a secondary school in Rumbek in 2006 to help educate the girls of that region. Because of their dedication along with your generous contributions, a primary school and a women and child centred primary healthcare facility were also established in Rumbek, benefiting so many of its inhabitants. Despite the difficulties encountered in the worlds newest country and the ongoing unrest in South Sudan, the school and the clinic are thriving.

Sr Orla spoke to the children from Junior Infants up to 6th Class about life in Africa and how different it is to our lives here in Ireland. The girls were shown slides of the school, its classrooms, the pupils uniforms and the homes the children live in. She also answered their questions about her experience in Rumbek. The girls gained an insight into the lives of those Loreto pupils far away in Africa. Her talk brought home to us all, how much our efforts, be they an Easter Bonnet walk or a bake sale, can contribute to making the world a little more equal for all its children. Our principal, Margeret Campbell was delighted to present Sr Orla with a donation from the girls in Loreto St Stephen's Green to the Loreto School and clinic in Rumbek. We salute you Orla and your team. Real Superheroes!
