Kilmainham Gaol Visit

Kilmainham Gaol Visit
5th & 6th take a guided Irish history tour
Thursday, April 30, 2015 - 11:17

On Thursday 30th April, 5th & 6th Classes went on a tour to Kilmainham Gaol.  This was the third trip the girls have taken as part of their Irish History programme.  We were lucky to have the opportunity to visit the gaol this year, as it has been closed to school groups since September for renovations.  This is to celebrate and mark the centenary of the '1916 Rising' next year.

We toured almost all of the gaol.  The exception was the famous 19th Century wing which is still closed for repairs.  Our guide explained the history of the gaol and spoke about th famous people in Irish History who had been held there.

The girls' favourite part of the tour was undoubtedly the 'stone-breakers' yard.  Silence descended as they heard the stories of the executions of the '1916 Leaders'.  Afterwards the girls were free to explore the museum to gain further knowledge on the gaol's 'guests'.

A thoroughly enjoyable and educational trip.
